Berlin's Perpetual Construction headaches
Battling endlessly blocked roads, Berliners face a daily struggle. Construction sites claim intersections, roads are temporarily closed or diverted, and traffic jams become the norm.
Seek answers, we did. We requested insights from two ongoing construction sites: Kaiserdamm and Wilmersdorf.
Kaiserdamm's 158-day standstill
Shut down since April 27, 2023, Kaiserdamm has left motorists, cyclists, and bus passengers stranded in traffic. Though no signs for detours exist, alternative routes are sought through alternating lanes or nearby side streets.
In Wilmersdorf, another headache persists at the Laubacher-/Blisse-/Detmolder Straße junction. Here the area has full closure since June 26, the bypass, city highway entrances, and exits are shut, and bus route 101 faces a significant reroute.
Stuck in the middle: Wasserbetriebe manages both sites
In Kaiserdamm, six sewer pipes undergo renovation. The project's spokesperson advised that procedures are progressing well. Intending to reopen Kaiserdamm's outbound side to traffic with two lanes in each direction by December 11. The inbound side, however, remains closed until April 2024.
Wilmersdorf witnessed the renovation of drinking water pipes, sewage systems, and a gas pipe from Gasag. Completed by November 10, the district office commenced reconstructing the carriageways, expecting to wrap up activities by the end of the month.
The 5-month ordeal of a handful of pipes
It's unclear why the progress is so slow, as the water company's explanations lack clarity. Are the delays due to the involved companies or coordination struggles?
Berlin's district authorities refrain from setting construction project deadlines, claiming it would necessitate higher costs. Omitting deadlines seems to perpetuate poorly conducted work, such as the Wiesbadener Straße construction site, which remains idle since December 6.
The site has been unused due to an 'early mistake' with construction barriers set up and limiting residents from side-parking. Communication failures between construction and road safety companies cause undue inconvenience for local residents.
Traffic regulators seem to ignore smooth traffic flow
The principle of prioritizing traffic seems to have taken a backseat. Disregard for commuters, who rely on the necessity of unobstructed roads, is evident.
Questions remain. Will authorities reconsider stricter deadlines and accountability in construction projects to promote smoother traffic flow and respect commuters' needs?
