In just four days, the venerable sacred area of Erfurt's Domplatz will transform into a fairground of love as Matthew Ferraro stages Puccini's La Bohème at Thuringia's largest opera festival.

Ferraro, a seasoned theatre professional, has dedicated himself body and soul to the production. With a background in theatre, having started at a young age and studied at Princeton, and training as a ballet dancer in New York, Ferraro brings a unique perspective to the classic opera. He also works as a night porter, a testament to his dedication to his craft.

The artists' garret, a sheet metal hut mounted on a stage wagon, becomes real life for the artists in the opera. The rehearsal, taking place at Erfurt's Domplatz, is filled with the magic of the performance, despite makeshift arrangements. Each actor brings their own interpretation to the production, adding layers of depth to the characters and their struggles.

Ferraro stages La Bohème classically, focusing on the human condition, idealism, and the reality of love as central themes. He hints at the end of the opera where Mimi's tuberculosis manifests, turning the romantic narrative into a poignant exploration of love's bittersweet reality.

Despite the contrast between youthful idealism and the harshness of life, Ferraro sees a turning point in the opera where one realizes that love alone is not enough. He does not express a preference for any specific love model in La Bohème, leaving it to the audience to interpret the complex relationships portrayed in the opera.

Ferraro works with three casts for the 20 performances of La Bohème, ensuring a fresh and vibrant interpretation for each performance. Clemens Fieguth conducts the opera, promising a musically rich experience for the audience.

As the premiere approaches, the rehearsal features a handful of internal spectators who know what to expect. The artists' household in the play appears vintage but familiar in front of the timeless background of an amusement park, adding to the opera's romantic and nostalgic appeal.

Ferraro's interpretation of La Bohème is a must-see for opera lovers and newcomers alike. It promises to be a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant production that will leave a lasting impression on audiences.
