Performing a vibrant rendition of 'King Lear' to captivate youth in Iran
In Iran's capital, Tehran, an innovative adaptation of William Shakespeare's "King Lear" is captivating audiences with its modern twist. Directed by Elika Abdolrazzaghi, the production seamlessly blends Shakespearean tragedy with an energetic soundtrack of rock music and dazzling stage design to attract younger audiences.
Artists in Iran must navigate delicate lines of censorship, as the authorities police content deemed inappropriate. Nonetheless, international works continue to make their way to the local stage. "King Lear" is one such production, fittingly adapted for contemporary sensibilities by Abdolrazzaghi.
"If I had adhered to the original version, it would have been overwhelming for attendees, and they might have found it uninteresting," Abdolrazzaghi explained to AFP. To inject fresh vigor into the performance, the director incorporated music from renowned British rock band Muse and German industrial metal act, Rammstein.
Vibrant costumes and bold lighting contribute to the festive atmosphere of the play, despite its dark undertones. First published in the early 17th century, "King Lear" revolves around the crumbling monarchy of an aging Lear, who decides to distribute his kingdom among his three deserving daughters based on their public flattery.
Unyielding to the charade, Lear disowns his youngest daughter, Cordelia. In a creative departure, Abdolrazzaghi transformed word-heavy scenes into movement, imagery, music, and dance. The actors don extravagant costumes in deep reds, greens, and yellows, inspired by 17th-century fashion.
Award-winning Iranian rock musician Reza Yazdani performs live on stage, providing a unique synergy of cultures. The production has received positive feedback from critics and spectators alike, with audiences praising the actors' performances, music, and set design.
"We never thought we could sit through a two-hour play," remarked 32-year-old Amin, a local engineer. "But it was incredibly captivating from start to finish."
Under the tutelage of Abdolrazzaghi and her team of around 100 collaborators, including several dozen actors, countless hours were spent preparing the show. "There are many female directors working in Iranian theater, but few receive recognition," Abdolrazzaghi shared.
Despite the Iranian authorities imposing no restrictions on staging foreign plays, artistic freedom is not without its challenges. "Theater is primarily a Western art form still young in Iran," Abdolrazzaghi noted.
Ahmad Saatchian, the play's lead actor with over two decades of experience, called Lear "the most remarkable role of my career." Tragedies such as "King Lear," replete with universal themes, continue to resonate with audiences worldwide, Othello’s lead actor added.
In recent years, numerous Shakespearean works have been performed in Iran, with productions finding common ground with countries experiencing similar political dynamics, such as Iran or Eastern European nations. In the final act, King Lear reflects on his experiences and calls on those in power to consider the suffering of the less fortunate, resulting in a poignant message that transcends cultural and political boundaries.
