Holiday season hiccup - Elderly driver leaves "HiFi Unger" in shambles
What a turn of events in Warburg (Höxter district)! An elderly driver from Hofgeismar (North Hesse) caused quite the stir, resulting in a whopping 100,000 euros worth of damages. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, as shared by the Höxter police.

Here's what transpired. It seems the gentleman had planned to take his wife to the Warburg hospital in the afternoon. Perhaps he got turned around, resulting in a collision with a lamppost as he attempted to turn. The vehicle became wedged, causing the pensioner to panic. He put the car in reverse and floored it, causing the car to break free and careen backwards across the road and sidewalk, ultimately crashing through the window of the "HiFi Unger" electronics store.
A security camera in the store captured the VW crashing through the window, leaving a path of destruction and ending up in the store's sales area. "Fortunately, it happened on a Sunday, and the store was empty," shared Managing Director Rainer Kobusch.

Trouble abounds. The store spans 300 square meters and employs ten individuals. The accident has left the premises in shambles, with around 100 electrical appliances (including a 30,000 euro television) destroyed. Leaking fuel and vapors have left the sales area in a smoky haze. The insurance company has seen fit to close the store until a damage assessment can be completed by an expert. Kobusch has now resorted to "corona mode" sales, leveraging online and telephone transactions due to the store's closure. "We can't yet estimate the financial impact," Kobusch lamented.
Remarkably, the Golf driver and his wife emerged from the incident unscathed. The man's driving abilities are now under scrutiny, as he has reportedly expressed an interest in voluntarily relinquishing his driver's license.
Additional Context:
- It is worth noting that fuel and vapors can often be harmful to electrical appliances and electronics, making the recovery and replacement process even more complex.
- The extent of the financial impact will depend on factors such as the insurance coverage, the cost of repairs and replacements, and any potential losses in sales during the Christmas season.
