Elderly Driver (73) Causes Car Wash Chaos
Sangerhausen (Germany) - The car wash journey turned into a wild ride for a 73-year-old man and a local business. After speeding through the car wash, he collided with several columns and brushes, causing an estimated €200,000 in damage.
The incident occurred on November 13 in the Mansfeld-Südharz district, Sangerhausen (population 30,648). Security footage depicts the Audi driver, initially moving slowly into the car wash. An employee was stationed nearby, ready to clean the car with a high-pressure washer.

Suddenly, the car accelerated with surprising speed, crashing into the car wash structures numerous times and leaving a trail of destruction as it went. The Audi eventually came to a halt after several meters, with the front end now snapped into the drying system's pillar.
The surveillance video continues to show the stunned employee wringing his hands in disbelief. After a brief moment of shock, he checks on the elderly driver.
The Damage Can Potentially Shutter the Business

Medical issues were ruled out as the cause of the accident. Instead, the elderly driver's accident was most likely attributable to "incorrect operation" of the automatic gear shift.
Felix Eichler, the car wash operator and third-generation business proprietor (35), now finds himself in dire straits. "This is simply devastating. The facility has been closed, and approximately 60% of it has been destroyed," Eichler laments.

Spare parts alone would take between 10 and 14 weeks to deliver. Worst of all was the cost of repairing the damage, estimated to be around €200,000.
Added to the repair costs are ongoing operational expenses, continued salary payments, and an outstanding loan. Currently, it remains uncertain when the insurance company will approve repairs and cover the costs.
In other regional news, an unusual series of traffic accidents across Thuringia necessitated thorough vehicle restorations. Meanwhile, Sangerhausen's car wash drama impacted the local business by potentially threatening its very existence.

Preventing Future Damage at Car Wash Facilities
Operators of car wash facilities can lessen the likelihood of costly incidents resulting from user errors or malfunctioning equipment. Several proactive measures can help minimize the risk of car wash mishaps:
- Advanced Safety Technologies:
- Car wash management systems can be equipped with advanced sensors and photo eyes that detect a vehicle's width, length, and position to enable automatic shutdown in dangerous circumstances. Operators could then intervene if necessary.[1][5]
- AI and Robotics:
- The intelligent use of AI, computer vision, and robotics can help preserve and clean critical vehicle components such as sensors and cameras. This ensures these components are protected from being damaged by excessive water, chemicals, or abrasive substances.[1]
- Effective Drying Equipment:
- Microfiber cloths and brushes can assist in leaving a car's exterior spotless without causing any damage to delicate components. These materials won't leave debris or water droplets on lips, sensors, or other unprotected car parts.[1]
- Standardized Cleaners:
- The industry should advocate for the use of harsh chemical-free cleaners specifically designed for sensitive vehicle components such as paint, lenses, and electronic displays.[1][3]
- Collision Prevention Systems:
- Collision prevention systems can help detect dangerous situations, with both static and dynamic photo eyes and sensors acting as a fail-safe for mechanical progress pads. These measures allow for preemptive actions to address any potential collisions.[1][5]
- Employee Training and Education:
- Regular training sessions for employees can help ensure they understand and perform their roles safely and effectively. Employees should be well-versed in the proper use of equipment, chemicals, and maintenance tasks.[2]
By implementing these strategies, car wash operators can significantly decrease the likelihood of costly incidents due to user error or equipment malfunctions, providing a safer and more dependable experience for all customers.
