A Pennsylvania man has copped to swindling his way into funding his reckless gambling habits.
Meet Louis Belletieri, 43, who's admitted to fleecing a title insurance underwriter and his clients for millions, all in the name of high-stakes sports betting.
This week, Belletieri throw in the towel, pleading guilty to two counts of wire fraud in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania according to federal prosecutors. Evidently, he ran a scam, defrauding the title insurance underwriter and clients of Legacy Title, his Allentown-based business, to bankroll his online sports betting addiction.
The Department of Justice points out that Belletieri's Legacy Title signed a contract with Fidelity National Title Insurance in November 2013. The deal tapped his firm as an agent for issuing title insurance commitments, policies, and endorsements for Pennsylvania properties. Legacy Title maintained an escrow account, receiving deposits from Fidelity mortgage borrowers.
In a nutshell, Belletieri should've left the escrow funds untouched for real estate transactions, disbursing funds as required. Instead, he pocketed cash for personal expenses, including his betting sprees.
Federal officials say Belletieri pilfered over $6.4 million from the escrow account between March 2020 and September 2023, channeling this loot to his personal accounts. In addition, he's smeared with allegations of transferring a staggering $2.5 million from the Fidelity escrow account to his Legacy Title account for non-business purposes.
Prison Time Ahead
The case against Belletieri progressed after more than a dozen homeowners and mortgage borrowers came forward with complaints about missing escrow funds. Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan took initial action, filing charges against Belletieri. However, he withdrew them once federal prosecutors took the reins.
Furthermore, Belletieri attempted to deceive authorities by taking out a fraudulent Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act loan, securing $825K, which was used on personal expenses.
Belletieri faces a maximum of 40 years in the slammer. His court date for sentencing is set for September 12.
Taking Responsibility
Belletieri's legal team has declared their client is undergoing treatment for gambling addiction and fully understands the consequences of his actions.
They stated, "Belletieri acknowledges his actions and takes no excuses. Unfortunately, he's one of the tens of millions of Americans battling addiction, the root of his actions."
In 2022, Belletieri's father, Louie Belletieri, proprietor of Louie's Italian Restaurant, an Allentown institution, confessed to failing to remit $89K in sales taxes to the state. He received a two-year probation sentence, ordered to pay restitution, but breathed his last in February 2023 due to Hodgkin's lymphoma.
