These extremist goons traveled from Saxony-Anhalt, eager to join a right-wing rally in Berlin, but their journey didn't go as planned. Chucked off the train early, they found themselves stranded on the outskirts of the city. In the heat of frustration, they stumbled upon two SPD members at a bus stop, easily recognizable by their red hats. Mistaking their political affiliation as a target, they launched a brutal assault on the hapless victims.
Unfortunately, things didn't end there. Engaging in a physical brawl with the law, they left a trail of destruction in their wake - police officers were injured, a window was smashed, and racial slurs were hurled. As a result, they were charged not only with dangerous bodily harm, but also with assaulting law enforcement officers, resisting arrest, insulting, and property damage.
The 19-year-old and one of the 20-year-olds were sentenced to youth prison terms of two years and eight months and two and a half years, respectively. The 17-year-old received a youth prison term of one year and nine months, and the second 20-year-old received a youth prison term of two years. For these two, the decision on suspension of their sentences was deferred for six months.
Though the court deemed their actions politically motivated, it fell short of the prosecutor's demands for tougher sentences. The prosecutor argued that the defendants acted with extreme brutality. However, the defense referred to reports from the youth court assistance that pointed to difficult family backgrounds for at least one of the 20-year-olds and the two brothers.
