For the Chill and Thoughtful Photography Lovers

Gregory Crewdson's photography is a dance between beauty and melancholy. This American artist has been creating awe-inspiring scenes for over 40 years, staying faithful to his love for the surreal and the in-between. His work is a testament to his fascination with the dichotomy of life, often capturing ordinary moments that carry a profound emotional weight.

Last year, a photo book showcasing his work was released, curated by Walter Moser, chief curator at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, where Crewdson's life's work was exhibited. These breathtaking and enigmatic images are a dive into the mysteries of everyday life, captivating the viewer with their raw emotions and psychological depth.

Leaving Modernity Behind

Crewdson, a son of a psychoanalyst, attributes his artistic standpoint to his own psyche. "There's a longing, a calm, a distance, and a sadness that often surface in my photos," he shared in an interview with the Albertina Museum. His work avoids the presence of contemporary elements like smartphones or modern cars, painting a timeless, transcendent picture that resonates with viewers long after they've turned the page.

The photograph book covers nine bodies of Crewdson's work created over the past three decades, including Early Work (1986-1988), his most famous series Twilight (1998-2002) and Beneath the Roses (2003-2008), and his latest series Eveningside (2021-2022). These series, carefully planned for months and involving a cast of up to a hundred people, are a testament to Crewdson's commitment to his vision and his unending quest for life's deeper meanings.

The Continuous Quest

For Crewdson, the exploration and capture of the world is an endless pursuit. His belief is that every image can only offer a hint, thus necessitating the creation of more. He conveys, "One must keep making more pictures to continuously search for the ultimate meaning - even if it always remains beyond our human reach."
