Peel hosts free sprint orienteering challenge for all ages this weekend
A free sprint orienteering event will take place in Peel on Saturday, January 24. Organised by the Isle of Man Orienteering Klubb, the main event invites people of all ages and abilities to navigate through the town and headland. Participants can choose to walk, jog, or run while exploring the area’s paths and pavements.
The event runs from 9:30 AM, with registration open until 10:20 AM at the car park below the headlands at the northern end of Peel promenade. Start times will be staggered between 9:30 and 10:30 AM, giving everyone a chance to begin at their own pace. Competitors must finish by midday, regardless of whether they complete the full course.
The challenge involves finding control flags scattered across Peel and its headland. Participants can visit the flags in any order, marking their scorecard with a pin punch at each location. A compass is optional but may help with navigation. Entry fees are set at £4 for adults and £1.50 for youths under 18, with a family maximum of £8. The organisers advise wearing suitable footwear and clothing for the weather and ground conditions. Care is also needed when crossing roads during the event. More details can be found on the Isle of Man Orienteering website and Facebook page.
The Manx Orienteering Federation has designed the event to be accessible for all skill levels. Those taking part will need to manage their time carefully to return by the noon deadline. The competition offers a chance to explore Peel while enjoying a mix of exercise and navigation.
