Peaked Support for AfD - Equal Footing with Union in ZDF Political Poll

In a significant shift in Germany's political landscape, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has overtaken the Union (CDU/CSU) in several recent polls, causing a stir in the political arena.

According to polls by YouGov and Forsa, the AfD has surpassed the Union for the first time, a development that has not gone unnoticed by political leaders. Alice Weidel, the AfD's federal spokesperson, has advocated for cooperation with the CDU/CSU-SPD coalition to ensure a parliamentary majority in a potential black-red coalition under Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

However, a majority of 63% of respondents still support the CDU's basic refusal to work with the AfD, while 60% expect worse politics if the AfD participates in the federal government. For 16%, an AfD participation in government would probably make no significant difference.

The CDU's coalition partner, the SPD, remains stable at 15% in the polls, with the Greens and The Left also maintaining their positions at 10% and 11%, respectively. The BSW and FDP remain at 3% each.

These poll results, while reflecting the current opinion landscape, should not be taken as predictions of possible election outcomes. They are subject to uncertainties due to decreasing party loyalty and increasingly short-term election decisions.

In other polls by different institutes, the AfD has been level with or just behind the Union, indicating a tight race between the two parties. The Union, meanwhile, has seen a slight dip, losing one percentage point, while the AfD has gained one.

This political shift has sparked debates among German political leaders, with Sahra Wagenknecht, a prominent political figure, criticising the "firewall" as an undemocratic stupidity in Berlin on 10.07.2025.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the question of whether the AfD will participate in the federal government and the impact it would have on German politics remains a topic of intense discussion and speculation.
