The Peeps Democratic Party (PDP) Cry Foul Over 2027 Endorsements: Governors Under the Microscope
PDP Will Discipline Governor Umo Eno, Along with Other Governors Favoring Tinubu's Repeat Term
In a surprising turn of events, the Peeps Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the stakes, threatening to discipline its governors and elected officials who openly support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's 2027 re-election bid.
At a recent National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, the party's acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, made it clear that such actions are seen as betrayal and will not be tolerated. Reports suggest that Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), are among those under scrutiny for their advocacy of Tinubu's second term.
Damagum made it abundantly clear that sanctions for this type of anti-party activity are imminent. The NWC also endorsed recommendations from the recent PDP Governors' Forum meeting in Ibadan, including the scheduling of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for May 27.
In the face of a wave of defections to the ruling APC, Damagum accused the party of employing intimidation and coercion to steal PDP members. "They can coerce, cajole and intimidate our members into joining them," he said. "But Nigerians will show them the results of their actions."
For PDP supporters, 2027 is shaping up to be a pivotal year, representing a crucial contest between the people and the APC-led government. Damagum emphasized the significant role that this clash will play.
Following a mass exodus of party leaders in Delta State, the PDP dissolved all existing structures in the state. A South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee has been tasked with overseeing party affairs until a new structure is put in place.
Damagum announced that the party's National Legal Adviser has been instructed to take legal action to recover mandates lost to defectors, in accordance with the Electoral Act. As he put it, "The fortune of this party cannot be left in the hands of our adversaries." He also sent a stern warning to party members, stating that disloyalty would not be rewarded.
