PDP Levels Allegations of Oppressive Gestures and Intimidation Tactics Against Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to Silence Opposition

"PDP Slams Okpebholo for Unjustified Demolition Threats against Party Members: Stop the Political Persecution"

It's all getting hot in Edo State as the People's Democratic Party (PDP) calls out the state's governor, Monday Okpebholo, for using his power like a bully. According to our site, this comes after plans for the demolition of properties belonging to members of the opposition party.

The PDP is fuming, claiming that this is nothing more than a tactic to squash the opposition and force silence upon Edo State's citizens. This fiery accusation followed Okpebholo's move to shell out some properties, which happen to belong to the opponents in the political arena.

Tony Aziegbemi, the head honcho of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, spoke out on the matter on June 11, 2025. He declared this demolition scheme as unwarranted and a blatant case of political victimization.

The PDP insists that Okpebholo is resorting to political persecution and a witch hunt, hoping to intimidate, silence, and incapacitate the opposition in Edo State. They also demanded an immediate stop to the demolition plans, calling on the Edo State Government to step back, respect the legal rights, and cherish the fundamental freedoms of their members, as well as all citizens, regardless of their political ties.

The statement pointed out how the Edo State Government, under the leadership of Okpebholo, has continued its trend of oppressive behavior, tyranny, and intimidation with the intent to suppress dissenting voices and coerce citizens into silence. They especially called out the targeting of Hon. Marcus Onobun, a member of the House of Representatives representing Esan West, Esan Central, and Igueben, and Hon. Collins Aigbogun, the rightfully elected Executive Chairman of Esan West Local Government Council.

The PDP then goes on to decry the abuse of power and misuse of legislation to focus on political foes. They firmly believe that the Anti-Cultism Law, as written, only permits property forfeiture or demolition following a valid conviction by a court of law. However, at the current moment, there is no such conviction against Onobun and Aigbogun - only baseless, unsubstantiated allegations.

The PDP plainly states that this is not law enforcement; it's a political witch hunt. They remind Okpebholo and the Edo State Government that Nigeria is governed by the law, not by executive rule, and the misuse of laws to strangle opposition and bully perceived rivals is a threat to the democratic health of Edo State and the entire nation.

They strongly denounce the vindictive demolition actions and urge all decent folks, civil society organizations, and the worldwide community to stand up against this injustice. The PDP urges an immediate halt to the demolitions and calls on the Edo State Government to back off, respect the legal rights and fundamental freedoms of Onobun and Aigbogun, and all citizens, no matter their political affiliation.

In a sense of legal responsibility, they even issue a warning to the policemen, bulldozer operators, and bulldozer owners, letting them know that if they participate in any demolition without a proper court order, they will be held responsible. The PDP reminds them that they do not share the immunity that Okpebholo enjoys, and the law detests the execution of unjust orders.

Finally, the PDP exhorts Okpebholo and the Edo State Government to put an end to the intolerance of opposition voices and the vindictive demolition in various forms and focus their energy on delivering transparent, inclusive, and effective governance. The political victimization must cease.

  1. The PDP has expressed concern over the action of the DSS, alleging their involvement in the unlawful demolition of properties belonging to members of the opposition party in Nigeria, specifically in Edo State.
  2. The political crisis in Edo State continues, as the APC, led by Bola Tinubu, denounces the alleged oppressive tactics by Governor Monday Okpebholo, calling for fairness and respect for the rule of law.
  3. In light of the ongoing war-and-conflicts in the political arena, the PDP has issued a policy-and-legislation warning to the police and bulldozer operators, reminding them of their legal responsibility not to carry out unjust demolitions without proper court orders.
  4. As the general news continues to highlight the political tussle between PDP and the Edo Government, international organizations and civil society groups are urged to stand up against the injustice and call for an immediate halt to the demolitions.
  5. In the heart of the political strife, the PDP calls on Governor Okpebholo and the Edo State Government to prioritize transparency, inclusivity, and effective governance, putting an end to the vindictive demolitions and political victimization.
