Cheering on Soldiers and Soldiers: Germany's First National Veterans Day

Germany's Minister-president Markus Süd emphasized the importance of soldiers and veterans on National Veterans Day. "In these turbulent times, service for our nation and our values is more crucial than ever. Thank you to all our veterans for their courage, determination, and dedication in serving our country," posted the CSU member on the platform X. The service of veterans deserves respect and recognition – "today and every day."
This Sunday marks the first time that active and retired soldiers of the Bundeswehr are honored on a National Veterans Day for their loyal service. The central event takes place in Berlin around the Reichstag building. The Bundestag President, Julia Klöckner (CDU), serves as the Veterans Day patron, a role the parliament approved in good numbers about a year ago. June 15 was designated as the date. In future, the day should be celebrated annually on the weekend before or after this date.
According to years of discussions, the definition of who qualifies as a veteran has been contentious. Germany finally opted for a broad definition, considering nearly every soldier and soldier – active and retired – as veterans so long as they have discharged honorably. Approximately ten million Germans have served in mandatory military service or held professional or temporary roles in the army, with around 500,000 men and women having served in actual military service.
Beyond Berlin, Veterans Day is celebrated in many cities and at Bundeswehr bases across the country. On the orders of Minister-president Süd, all state administrative buildings are decorated with flags. The communities, districts, administrative regions, and other public institutions are asked to act in the same way. In Bavaria, veterans of the Bundeswehr receive free admission to the state palaces and gardens on this day.

Veterans Day's Deep-rooted Past and Future Significance
Following years of discussion and the government's hesitance to celebrate military service, a proposal for a National Veterans Day in Germany emerged in 2012, but gained little momentum due to discomfort with military symbolism in German society. The broad definition of veterans in 2018, which included more than 11 million current and former servicemembers, faced backlash from those who felt that the specific service they provided was ignored. It was not until April 2024 that the Bundestag took decisive action, approving an annual commemoration day for veterans by a large majority.
The establishment of Veterans Day in Germany signifies a shift in public discourse, largely influenced by external events, including Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Supporters of the day hope it will foster respect for veterans, support their reintegration into civilian life, and encourage open dialogue between military leaders, political figures, and society at large.
As per the current definition, a veteran is any member of the Bundeswehr who has served and retired honorably. Many of these veterans have participated in international missions, such as Afghanistan.
The central celebration of the first official Veterans Day took place in 2024, but went largely unnoticed by the public. The inaugural central ceremony, marking the first high-profile observance, is scheduled for June 15, 2025, at the Reichstag building in Berlin. The event will include the presentation of veterans' badges by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, along with cultural elements such as an exhibition by Bryan Adams. If Veterans Day falls on a weekday, the official celebration may be moved to the preceding or following weekend to boost participation and engagement.
National Veterans Day in Germany symbolizes a significant step in acknowledging the sacrifices and achievements of servicemembers, while also reflecting the tension between the country's military past and contemporary values.
