Fog leaves future in Mainz uncertain - Contract expires in 2027 - Paul Nebel's Bundesliga struggle tests his future at Mainz 05
Paul Nebel's time at FSV Mainz 05 has hit a rough patch this season. The midfielder, whose contract runs until summer 2027, has struggled to hold down a regular starting place. Despite his challenges, he remains focused on helping his boyhood club avoid relegation from the Bundesliga.
Nebel's season began with high expectations after earning his first call-up to the German senior national team in 2025. However, his form dipped, leading to a five-week absence from the starting lineup—his last start before that came on 24 January 2025 against Wolfsburg. A return to the team saw him feature as an attacking midfielder, playing alongside Jae-sung Lee and Kaishu Sano.
A brief upturn followed, including a key assist for Sheraldo Becker's goal in the 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen on 28 February 2026. Yet, consistency has eluded him, and he has since lost his place in the first watch again. Off the pitch, Nebel maintains a strong relationship with sporting director Christian Heidel and technical director Niko Bungert. Still, he has yet to commit to extending his current deal.
His international prospects also remain uncertain. Though called up for World Cup qualifiers, he did not make an appearance for the national side.
With his contract set to expire in 2027, Nebel's immediate priority is helping Mainz secure Bundesliga survival. His future at the club remains undecided, as he has not signed a new agreement. For now, the midfielder continues to push for a return to his best form.
