Paul George's 25-game NBA suspension leaves Sixers scrambling before trade deadline
Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George has been suspended for 25 games after violating the NBA's anti-drug programme. The ban will cost him roughly $11.7 million of his $51.7 million salary this season. His absence leaves the team facing tough decisions before the February 5 trade deadline.
George, who joined the Sixers this season, has averaged 16 points across 27 games. He missed the first 12 matches after undergoing left knee surgery in July. The team's record reflects his impact: they stand at 16-11 when he plays and 10-10 without him.
The NBA did not reveal details about the violation or the substance involved. George will be eligible to return on March 25, when Philadelphia hosts the Chicago Bulls.
In his absence, Tyrese Maxey has stepped up as the Sixers' main scorer, averaging over 28 points per game. Rookie VJ Edgecombe has also impressed early in the 2025-2026 season, delivering standout performances. The Sixers, currently sixth in the Eastern Conference at 26-21, had hoped to contend in the playoffs with George, Joel Embiid, and Maxey all healthy.
The suspension forces Philadelphia to reassess its plans ahead of the trade deadline. George's return in late March will come just before the playoffs, but the team must now navigate a critical stretch without him. The financial penalty and on-court absence add pressure as the Sixers aim to secure their postseason position.
