Patrick Reed quits LIV Golf for Europe after Dubai Desert Classic win
Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, has become the second major winner to leave Saudi-funded LIV Golf. His departure follows a victory at the Dubai Desert Classic just three days earlier. The American golfer will now compete full-time on the European tour for the rest of the year before planning a return to the PGA Tour.
Reed's decision comes as LIV Golf prepares to start its fifth season in Saudi Arabia next week. Instead of joining the tour there, he will play in Bahrain this week as part of the European tour's schedule. His move ensures he remains eligible for all four majors this season.
The PGA Tour has confirmed Reed will not face extra penalties upon his return. As a past champion, he retains his PGA Tour status and could rejoin as early as September. His last LIV Golf appearance marks the start of a one-year waiting period before he can officially return to the PGA Tour.
Reed's exit leaves LIV Golf without one of its high-profile players. He will spend the remainder of 2024 on the European tour, maintaining his competitive form. His return to the PGA Tour next year will depend on meeting the one-year eligibility requirement.
