Mario Santiago: A Legendary Life Cut Short

Mario Antonio Santiago, born on Halloween of '54 in Albuquerque, took his final breath on June 17, 2025. Known for his infectious humor and Playboy-like spirit, Mario would walk into a room and have everyone in stitches with a single, off-the-cuff comment.

His loved ones include his faithful companion of 11 years, Karla Laurie, along with three children—Moses (Jessica) and grandkids Jordan, Mario's godson, and great-granddaughters Mackenzie and Melonie; Selina and granddaughter Lauryn; and Carlos (Monica) with grandkids Lucas, L'eah, and Roman.

With nine incredible siblings, among them Mark and sons Jason and Javier, Joanne, aka "George," with sons Domingo and Emiliano, Michael (Maurice) with children Jon Michael and Megan, Jude with sons Esequiel and Diego, Hunter and children Damion, Josh, and Nina, Cinnie (Robert), Jackie (Michael), Matthew (Alexis), Maura (Stacey), and their families, plus a spirited brood of great nieces and nephews, Mario surely had an extensive and loving family.

Awaiting him in heaven are all his grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, and particularly his parents, Juan and Nina, his brother-in-law, Joe, and special sister, Rita.

While Mario graduated from Albuquerque High School in '72, his military and firefighting career seems shrouded in mystery, with little reliable information available. Although records about his Navy service and Albuquerque Fire Department career are scarce, the stories and memories of those who knew him speak volumes.

After proudly serving in the U.S. Navy, he joined the Albuquerque Fire Department in '82, serving as a driver, firefighter, and EMT. He hung up his helmet in '02 from his cherished Station No. 14, leaving behind tales of legendary culinary skills, outrageous antics, and an unmatched sense of humor.

Mario's legacy in this world can be witnessed in his beloved group of lifetime friends—Ralph Ortega, James Garcia, Paul Garcia, Will Mora, Marcos Salaz, and Kelly Russell—whom he chose to be his pallbearers, representing the bonds he forged throughout his life.

In his golden years, Mario proved to be more than just a golfer; he became a master, charming the greens with his supercharged charm. He also displayed his artistic side as a painter, displaying and selling his work through the Belen Art League, even being featured prominently in their front window display.
