Party supporters stand firm on agreement with Bhumjaithai faction

Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, head of the People's Party, contested allegations that their party serves as a base for the Bhumjaithai Party, in response to criticisms towards the alliance between the two parties that allowed Anutin Charnvirakul to secure the prime minister position.

Party supporters stand firm on agreement with Bhumjaithai faction

The People's Party, under the leadership of Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, has asserted its commitment to serving as the opposition in the Thai government, particularly under the Anutin Charnvirakul administration.

In a recent statement, Mr. Natthaphong clarified that the People's Party is not acting as scaffolding for any party, including Bhumjaithai. He mentioned that the party is prepared to scrutinise the current administration through parliamentary debate and other mechanisms.

The relationship between the two parties has been under scrutiny, following the influx of politicians to the Bhumjaithai Party, orchestrated by the party leadership in early 2023. Massage parlour tycoon-turned-politician Chuwit Kamolvisit suggested that the People's Party had been outmaneuvered by Bhumjaithai in the political arena. However, Mr. Natthaphong has rejected these claims, reiterating the party's role as the opposition.

The People's Party and Bhumjaithai had signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) that prohibits Bhumjaithai from forming a majority government and mandates the dissolution of the House within four months. Mr. Natthaphong stated that it is premature to assess if the MoA has strengthened the Bhumjaithai Party.

In the event of a dispute, Mr. Natthaphong mentioned that removing Bhumjaithai from the government would not be difficult due to the presence of more than 140 MPs from the People's Party in the House. He emphasised that only a vote in the House can determine if Bhumjaithai has breached the MoA.

Mr. Pakornwut Udompipatsakul, the chief opposition whip and deputy PP leader, acknowledged different opinions, accepting Mr. Chuwit's viewpoint. However, he did not comment on whether the PP had been outmaneuvered by Bhumjaithai, focusing on accepting differing views.

If there is evidence that the Anutin government has breached the MoA, the People's Party will use every available mechanism to investigate thoroughly, according to Mr. Natthaphong. The party remains in opposition to the Pheu Thai Party, which is also present in the House.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Chuwit expressed his concern about Bhumjaithai's celebration and gaining popularity, with MPs joining them, and that the MoA seems to be ignored. Despite this, the People's Party is ready to maintain its role as the opposition, ensuring a balanced and accountable government.
