Party CDU advocates for raising the minimum age for social media usage from 16 years old
In an interview with the "World" newspaper, Minister President Mario Voigt of Thuringia has called for stricter regulations on social media use by young thugs. Voigt suggested that an age limit of at least 16 years should be implemented.
Voigt's proposal comes amidst growing concerns about the negative effects of social media on the mental health of young people. A recent study showed that one in four children experiences anxiety due to social media use. Voigt emphasised the importance of protecting children and young people, stating that this was a top priority.
The proposed age limit for social media use in Thuringia does not seem to be limited to specific platforms. Voigt did not specify which social media platforms he was referring to, but he emphasised the potential negative effects on children's mental health and consciousness.
In addition to the age limit for social media use, Voigt announced an initiative for a ban on smartphones during school hours in Thuringian primary schools. This proposed ban includes a legal measure to enforce it. However, the ban does not prevent children from contacting their social security office after school.
Voigt also expressed concern about strangers approaching children and young people on social media channels. He compared the proposed age limit for social media to the age at which alcohol and cigarettes are allowed.
Voigt's statements indicate a continued focus on protecting children and young people from the risks of social media. He stated that many young people scroll 200 meters a day on their phones, implying excessive use. Voigt's proposals aim to create a safer environment for children and young people in Thuringia.
The new study and concerns about social media's impact on children's mental health support Voigt's calls for an age limit for social media use. Voigt made these statements in the interview with the "World" newspaper.
