Corona Pandemic: AfD's Push for Corona Fine Compensation Falls Flat
Party AFD Faces Setback in Lawsuit Over COVID-19 Fines - Party AfD unsuccessful in seeking compensation for coronavirus fines
Let's kick it old school, folks. The corona pandemic fines imposed in Thuringia on those breaking COVID-19 rules ain't going nowhere. Why, you ask? AfD's plea for compensation was buried like a lead balloon in Thuringia's state parliament. The bill, proposed by AfD, went down in flames with a resounding no from the CDU, BSW, SPD, and Left Party, who voted it down a whopping 44 votes stronger than AfD's 32 cheers.
The SPD'sHealth Minister Katharina Schenk accused the AfD of kicking sand in the face of the heroes who fought to reduce infections and deaths during the pandemic through scientific efforts.
The ol' AfD went ahead and proposed up to four mil' Euros of state dough for paying off the compensation, including fines and warnings handed out for flouting Corona regulations. That's what Sascha Schloesser, an AfD MP, called it – a "rectification of injustice" law.
Ulrike Grosse-Röthig, a Left Party MP, pointed out that a good chunk of corona regulations were reviewed by the Thuringian Constitutional Court, initiated by none other than the AfD themselves. The measures were deemed proportional by the judges, except for a temporary nighttime curfew. The AfD, said Grosse-Röthig, just wants to call into question state action in mass, delegitimizing it under the guise of justice for the people. As for other factions, they were raining down criticism on the bill too.
[Insight: The AfD's bill for compensation for Corona fines was rejected in the Thuringian state parliament due to a lack of political support. Similar initiatives related to pandemic compensations, proposed by the AfD, have generally faced rejection due to legal, political, and public health concerns, as seen in court rulings against COVID-19 fine-related compensation claims. The government and the political mainstream, which include parties in the German federal and state parliaments, typically oppose AfD efforts concerning pandemic policies and compensations, considering pandemic restrictions and fines as lawful measures to control the virus spread, which do not warrant retrospective compensation.[1]]
