In February 2024, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny tragically passed away at the age of 47, under unclear circumstances in a penitentiary. The cause of his death, however, has been the subject of intense scrutiny and controversy.

Two independent laboratories have concluded that Navalny was poisoned, but the specific poison used and the laboratories that conducted the tests have not been disclosed. Navalny's widow, Navalnaya, has called for the release of the laboratory reports, emphasizing the need to identify the poison clearly.

Navalny was initially treated at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin after being flown there following his poisoning with the nerve agent Novichok in Siberia in August 2020. The poisoning left him in a coma.

Despite his critical condition, prison guards in Russia reportedly left Navalny in his cell and closed the bars and door instead of providing him with immediate medical attention. Photos of a cell, allegedly taken after Navalny's death, show traces of vomit and blood on the floor.

Statements from five prison staff members in the Charp penitentiary camp, where Navalny died, have been obtained. However, the Russian authorities have maintained a different narrative, stating that Navalny suddenly collapsed and died during a yard walk.

Navalnaya has been unable to publish the official results of the laboratory tests, and in January 2021, she was placed on a blacklist of 'terrorists and extremists' by the Russian financial monitoring service Rosfinmonitoring after her husband's death.

Leonid Volkov, an associate of Alexei Navalny, accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of having Navalny 'murdered' on the Telegram messaging service. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov has remained silent on the allegations, stating during his daily press briefing, 'I have nothing to say about this' and adding, 'I know nothing about this topic.'

A Russian court issued an arrest warrant against Navalnaya for 'participation in an extremist organization.' These statements, though sometimes contradictory, provide a general impression of what happened to Navalny and fuel ongoing questions about his death.

Maria Pewtschich, an employee of the oppositionist, stated that Navalny was lying on the floor, vomiting and in pain, at the time of his death. The specific poison used against Alexei Navalny has not been officially released, and the investigation into his death continues.
