Parties in Narathiwat denounce acts of violence

A wave of vicious attacks has swept Southern Thailand, sparking immense outrage and fear among its citizens and escalating ethnic and religious tensions. Recent incidents include the brutal slaying of monks, a mass shooting that claimed the life of a nine-year-old, and a drive-by shooting that left a blind woman dead.

These shocking attacks have intentionally targeted the vulnerable, inflicting devastating loss and stirring widespread distress. Analysts attribute these incidents to the ongoing stalemate in peace talks under both the current and previous governments, as well as the failure to appoint a Thai representative for dialogue.

In response, the Thai government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has bolstered security forces in the border provinces and set up checkpoints to protect civilians. The Royal Thai Army and Police, under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, are collaborating to tighten security measures. However, despite the increased military presence, the insurgency persists.

Insurgent groups continue to attack, resorting to vicious acts against three primary targets: Thai Buddhists, state officials, and Muslims who support the government. Some groups, such as the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), have denied direct involvement in civilian attacks.

As the violence intensifies, parties on both sides of the political aisle have called for peaceful resolutions. The Pheu Thai Party has condemned the attacks and voiced commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice, while the opposition People's Party has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence. They urge insurgent groups to commit to the peace-building process and appeal to the Prime Minister to revive peace negotiations, which have been stalled for nearly a year.

The opposition party also suggests inclusive peace forums that allow participation from impacted Buddhist and Muslim communities. They emphasize the need for decision-makers with influence over violence to be included in the peace process.

As Southern Thailand grapples with spiraling violence, it becomes crucial to break the cycle and pave the way for sustainable peace. Reviving dialogue and addressing the root causes of the conflict will be essential steps towards achieving this goal.
