Contestants Gather for the Pope Election Ceremony - Participating in the Pope Elections: A New Beginning

Now, here's the lowdown on the 2025 Papal Election:

Popey old Pope Francis showed up to the Vatican, but not to cast his vote for the new pope—he was the one about to hang up his papal slippers. On May 7th, 2025, a throng of 133 cardinal-electors, not ol' Popey, marched into the fancy-pantsy Sistine Chapel. This solemn procession kicked off after a morning Mass at the one-and-only St. Peter’s Basilica, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. They strolled in around 3:45 pm, after a morning Mass, starting from the Pauline Chapel and sliding into the Sistine Chapel.

The cardinals sang the "Litany of the Saints" and the hymn "Veni Creator Spiritus," hollering at the Holy Spirit to show up and lend a hand. As they entered the chapel, they were ready to elect the 267th pope.

So yeah, Pope Francis was there, but he didn't get a say in the election—he was the one being sized up for a bright yellow rocking chair!
