Participants Arrived but Organizers Absent: Turned Out to be an Unofficial "Don't Run" Gathering!

On Sunday, May 25th, 2025, Suan Luang Rama IX Park in Bangkok played host to a much-anticipated community health event, "Run for Destination 2025". However, hundreds of participants ended up in confusion and frustration when they found the event was a no-show.

Promoted as a 10km and 5km run, with a registration fee of 450 baht, the event turned out to be a sham, as participants arrived to find no organizers, no starting line, and a banner dated 2028 instead of the promised race day.

According to the schedule, the 10km race was set to commence at 6am, followed by the 5km run at 6.10am. Instead, the crowd of runners, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts who had gathered early in the morning were left bewildered, with no race in sight.

The disappointing turn of events prompted numerous complaints at the Prawet Police Station, as the affected participants sought answers.

In their defense, the organizers, believed to be associated with a well-known private company, have been questioned by the police. The organizers claim that the event was genuine and that race kits, including bibs, shirts, hats, and digital watches, were handed out to approximately 600 of the 1,800 registered runners. The authorities are verifying these claims, investigating whether the kits were mailed, collected in advance, or intended for pick-up on the race day itself.

Pending further investigation, those responsible could potentially face charges under consumer protection laws, computer crime laws, and civil litigation, should the event be found to be a fraudulent endeavor. In the meantime, the police are collaborating with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Environment Department to unravel the intricacies of this saga.

In a related turn of events, Panisara, a contracted staff member working for the event, has shared insights into the internal disarray leading up to the fateful day. She and her 63-person team, assigned roles in managing water stations and course directions, were paid 500 baht each, stationed at various locations, but found themselves as confused as the participants when the race operations failed to materialize.

Adding to the controversy, banners displaying the MK Restaurant Group logo were spotted at the event location, leading to public backlash. MK Group, however, released a formal statement, affirming they had provided limited financial sponsorship, but held no role in organizing or managing the event. They announced their intention to pursue legal action against the organizers for damages to the company's reputation and stakeholders.

This scandal has sparked heated discussions about accountability in event management and highlighted the need for effective oversight, ensuring the protection of consumers from similar incidents in the future.
