Sansad Ratna Awards 2025 Honour Exceptional Parliamentarians and Committees

The Sansad Ratna Awards, a prestigious honour for legislative excellence in India, celebrated its 15th edition this year at Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi. Instituted in 2010 by Prime Point Foundation and the eMagazine PreSense, inspired by the vision of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, these awards recognise and honour outstanding performance by Members of Parliament (MPs) and parliamentary committees.

This year, 17 individual Parliamentarians and two Parliamentary Standing Committees received the Sansad Ratna Awards. Among the winners were Prof. Gaikwad Varsha Eknath (Indian National Congress), Smita Uday Wagh (BJP), and Shrirang Appa Barne (Shiv Sena, Maharashtra), who received Individual Awards. Naresh Ganpat Mhaske (Shiv Sena) and Arvind Ganpat Sawant (Shiv Sena UBT) also received Individual Awards.

The Standing Committee on Agriculture, chaired by Dr Charanjit Singh Channi (Indian National Congress, Punjab), and the Standing Committee on Finance, chaired by Bhartruhari Mahtab (BJP, Odisha), were recognised for their exceptional performance. N.K. Premachandran (RSP, Kerala), Supriya Sule (NCP SP, Maharashtra), and Bhartruhari Mahtab (BJP, Odisha) received Special Awards.

The criteria for the awards are based on measurable performance data from parliamentary proceedings, ensuring transparent and non-partisan recognition. Performance indicators include the number of initiated debates, private members' bills introduced, and questions raised.

Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Assam each won 1 Individual Award, while Maharashtra won 7 Individual Awards. Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan each won 2 Individual Awards.

Shri Kiren Rijiju, Union Cabinet Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, spoke on the occasion, commending the Sansad Ratna Awards as a commendable initiative. Since its inception in 2010, 125 awards have been presented across 14 award ceremonies.

The Sansad Ratna Awards have gained recognition as prestigious honours for legislative excellence in India, also marking milestones such as enabling greater recognition of parliamentarians from underrepresented regions like Northeast India. While the Sansad Ratna Awards focus on parliamentary achievement post-2010, the related Sarala Sahitya Sansad has a longer history tied to Odisha’s literary and cultural recognition, but this is distinct from the Sansad Ratna parliamentary award.

The Sansad Ratna Awards continue to promote and reward effective parliamentary participation and legislative contributions in India, emphasising parliamentary excellence and accountability, as envisioned by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
