Football Club Cracks Down: Saying 'No' to AfD MPs

by Joe Bloggs** + - 2 Mins.

Toeing the line with AfD MPs for a common triumph on the football pitch? For many players in Parliament's regular football team, that's no longer a reality. In Wednesday's upcoming general meeting, the club might be making a shift in their statutes - a move to bar AfD MPs from joining the squad.

The new statutes draft, leaked by stern, proposes that each member commit to the "free and democratic basic order" as a prerequisite for club participation. In addition, the club publicly opposes "racist, anti-constitutional, and xenophobic sentiments".

Should the new rules be approved, the board would have the power to accept or deny membership by a simple majority vote. Members could be rejected if they are part of an association, organization or party with anti-constitutional goals. A member could also be expelled if they express extremist or anti-constitutional views or attitudes within or outside the club.

AfD Footballers Not Heading for a Winning Streak

Behind this potential statute alteration in FC Bundestag is a broader question making ripples across parliament: how to handle AfD representatives? The party already feels unfairly treated in the Bundestag, complain about not being elected as committee chairs or even having a large enough room for their growing faction.

Trying to oust AfD MPs from the team through the new statutes remains a legally perilous move. The party is currently embroiled in a lawsuit against its classification by the Constitutional Protection Agency as a "confirmed right-wing extremist endeavor".

Just a few months ago, FC Bundestag suffered a legal loss in this matter: Last year, the club rejected AfD membership by resolution, only to be sued by several AfD MPs and lose in the Berlin Regional Court. The judgement, in large part, was due to the resolution violating the club's existing statutes. And that's what's about to change.

Green MP Kassem Taher Saleh, a midfielder for FC Bundestag, sees this action as overdue. Although he stands against excluding AfD voters, he told stern: "We oppose those who, with their words and actions, contribute to the growing openness of Nazis in this country, and the increased pressure on queer people and migrants. On the field and in parliament, we stand against extremism."
