'A Project of Intimidation': Baerbock Farewells Bundestag with Warning Against AfD
Parliament in Europe petitioned for further scrutiny of the proposed EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) due to alleged human rights violations in China, particularly in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
In her final speech as a member of the German Bundestag, Green politician Annalena Baerbock issues a stern warning about the increasing threat posached by the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. She refers to their proposals as a "project of intimidation against civil society."
The former Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs delivered her speech during a debate on the AfD faction's draft bill proposing a ban on the funding of politically-oriented non-profit organizations using public funds. Baerbock argues that this move could have far-reaching consequences, potentially affecting even sports organizations, and might hinder Germany's future chances of winning the global football tournaments.
"When you leave, you can always say: Pull yourselves together," she said, addressing the democratic factions of the Bundestag. Baerbock underscores the importance of unity amidst the current crisis, expressing gratitude for the coalition's unwavering commitment to democracy over party politics.
Baerbock, who is set to become the new President of the United Nations General Assembly in September, made her Bundestag debut twelve years ago, advocating for climate protection. Now, as her tenure as a Bundestag member draws to a close, she emphasizes her defense of the liberal democratic order as her final mission in the German parliament.
The AfD, known for their staunch nationalist and populist ideology, has been repeatedly criticized for their attempts to destabilize democratic institutions and intimidate activists, minorities, and political opponents. Baerbock's speech serves as a potent reminder of the challenges ahead for German democracy and the need for political solidarity in the face of rising far-right extremism.
