Next Evening Service in Bad Salzungen-Dermbach Church District to Feature Paul Gerhardt's Hymns
On August 3rd at 6 PM, the Evangelical Church in Neidhartshausen will host the next evening service for the Bad Salzungen-Dermbach church district. The service will be a special occasion, as it will feature the hymns of the renowned German Lutheran pastor and hymn writer, Paul Gerhardt.
Jana and Thomas Volkmann have prepared the sermon and liturgy for the service, carefully intertwining verses from the Psalms with the stanzas of Gerhardt's hymns. This integration and alternation between presentation and communal singing are expected to give the texts a unique depth and vitality.
The service will begin with the famous hymn of Paul Gerhardt, "I Sing to You with Heart and Mouth." This hymn, like many of Gerhardt's works, reflects theological depth, personal faith, and poetic richness. The question posed in the hymn, "What are we? What do we have on this entire earth?" serves as a poignant reminder of our place in the world and our relationship with God.
The service will be musically accompanied by Matthias Theuerkauf on the organ. Gerhardt's hymns have been set to music by many composers throughout history, and Theuerkauf's performance promises to be a moving and memorable experience.
Following the service, all attendees are invited to a light refreshment in the church garden. However, in case of bad weather, the refreshment will take place inside the church. The church community looks forward to welcoming many visitors and sharing this special service with them.
Paul Gerhardt's inspiring attitude can serve as a source of courage and contentment for us all, especially in these challenging times. His unshakeable trust in God and serenity amidst great personal trials can remind us of the importance of faith and devotion in our lives.
The service will not repeat the performance of the hymn "I Sing to You with Heart and Mouth," nor will it repeat the intertwining of verses from the Psalms with the stanzas of Gerhardt's hymns. The service will not repeat the combination of spoken word and song, but rather, it will offer a unique and meaningful experience for all who attend.
