Park University's International Music Center will stage the second performance of the 2021-22 season with its orchestra.
David Stewart Wiley, the esteemed conductor and music director of the Roanoke (Va.) Symphony Orchestra since 1996, will be making a special appearance at Park University's International Center for Music (ICM) on Friday, Nov. 5. The concert, marking the ICM Orchestra's second performance of the 2021-22 season, promises an evening of captivating symphonic music.
The event will take place inside the University's flagship Parkville Campus, with the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel serving as the venue. Admission to the concert is free, but reservations are required, and can be made by emailing Gus Fernandez Agreda. To ensure the safety of all attendees, masks are required inside the Chapel, and social distance seating will be implemented.
The concert program is a symphony of diverse compositions, including works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Edward Elgar, Dimitry Shostakovich, George Walker, and, of course, David Stewart Wiley himself. The Bach composition, "Concerto for Two Violins and Strings in D Minor, S. 1043," will feature soloists David Horak and Orin Laursen, both ICM violin graduate students who recently earned their bachelor's degrees from Park University.
Elgar's "Serenade for String Orchestra in E Minor, Op. 20" will also be performed, as well as Dimitry Shostakovich's "Symphony for Strings [String Quartet No. 8], Op. 110" and George Walker's "Lyric for Strings."
Wiley's impressive career in orchestral music has been marked by innovative collaborations and a commitment to engaging diverse audiences. He has been associated notably with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and has received numerous accolades, including the Roanoke Citizen of the Year award in 2015 and the Aspen Conducting Prize. In 2009, he was honoured by the Roanoke branch of the NAACP for his lasting and deep commitment to students of all ages and backgrounds.
Before his tenure with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, Wiley served as assistant conductor of both the Minnesota Orchestra and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. His work with these major regional orchestras speaks to a high level of professional recognition.
