The Park University International Center for Music Orchestra is set to captivate audiences with their annual Valentine's concert on February 7, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. in Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on the Parkville Campus.
The concert will feature a delightful mix of Spanish melodies and rhythms, as well as a selection of timeless classics. The programme includes "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, K. 525" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "Adoration" by Florence Price arranged by Elaine Fine, "Air and Simple Gifts" by John Williams, "Serenade for String Orchestra in E Minor, Op. 20" by Sir Edward Elgar, and "Make Our Garden Grow" from the operetta Candide by Leonard Bernstein arranged by Ted Ricketts.
A highlight of the concert will be the performance of "Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra," composed by Cesar Franck, by Ilya Shmukler, a graduate student at the International Center for Music. Ilya, who has participated twice in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, advancing to the quarterfinal round in 2017 and being one of six finalists in 2022, earning an additional prize for "Best Performance of a Mozart Concerto," studied at the Park ICM since 2019 under the tutelage of Stanislav Ioudenitch, who was the co-gold medalist of the Cliburn competition in 2001.
The concert will be under the direction of guest conductor Jason Seber, former associate director of the Kansas City Symphony (2016-2022). Known for his inviting and engaging approach on and off the podium, Seber strives to make music of many genres and styles accessible, relevant, and meaningful to diverse audiences.
