Park University International Music Center Set to Present Second Concert of the 2021-22 Season with Orchestra

The Park University International Center for Music Orchestra is set to present its second concert of the 2021-22 season on Nov. 5, and it promises to be an unforgettable evening of classical music. The concert, which will take place inside Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on the University's flagship Parkville Campus, will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Guest conductor David Stewart Wiley, a distinguished American conductor, will lead the orchestra. Widely recognised for his extensive career in music conductorship, particularly in orchestral and operatic fields, Wiley has made significant contributions to the performance and promotion of classical music.

The concert will feature works by renowned composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Edward Elgar, Dimitry Shostakovich, George Walker, and a composition by David Stewart Wiley himself. The Bach composition will have ICM violin graduate students David Horak and Orin Laursen as soloists.

One of the highlights of the evening will be Wiley's presentation of his own composition, titled Concentric Circles. Another noteworthy piece is the Elgar work, Serenade for String Orchestra in E Minor, Op. 20. The Shostakovich piece is Symphony for Strings [String Quartet No. 8], Op. 110, while the Walker composition is Lyric for Strings.

Wiley's achievements in the music world are numerous. He has conducted important orchestras and opera festivals, including Spoleto Festival USA, known for its high-profile classical music events. He has also been recognised for his artistic direction and ability to interpret classical and contemporary works in orchestral settings.

In 2015, Wiley was honoured as the Roanoke Citizen of the Year, and in 2009, he received a similar award from the Roanoke branch of the NAACP. He has served as the music director and conductor of the Roanoke (Va.) Symphony Orchestra since 1996.

Admission to the concert is free, but reservations are required by emailing Gus Fernandez Agreda. Masks are required inside the Chapel and social distance seating will be implemented to ensure the safety of all attendees.
