Park Chan-wook's 'No Other Choice' Dominates South Korean Box Office
South Korea's box office was dominated this weekend by 'No Other Choice', a dark comedy thriller by Park Chan-wook. The film, starring Lee Byung-hun, took $4.6m on its opening weekend, outperforming Park's previous feature 'Decision To Leave'.
The movie, based on Donald E. Westlake's 1997 novel 'The Ax', tells the story of a family man who, after being fired, becomes determined to secure a new job, eliminating obstacles along the way. 'No Other Choice' has been making waves since its release on September 24, earning a cume of $7.47m and 1.07 million admissions as of the end of the weekend.
The film's success is not surprising, given its critical acclaim. After premiering at the Venice Film Festival, it won the inaugural International People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and opened the Busan International Film Festival on September 17. Its weekend performance even surpassed that of 'My Daughter Is A Zombie', the year's biggest title so far in South Korea.
'No Other Choice' has proven to be a strong contender at the box office, leading to its selection as South Korea's submission for the Oscars. With its impressive opening weekend and positive reception, the film is poised to continue its success in the coming weeks.
