Paris's newest goalkeeper proves to be a triumphant athlete
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have added another trophy to their impressive collection, winning the European Super Cup in a dramatic penalty shootout against Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur. The final, which ended in a draw (2:2, 0:1) after regular time, was a closely contested match that showcased both teams' resilience and skill.
The game began with PSG dominating possession, but their high-speed attacks were neutralized by Tottenham for much of the match. In the first half, Ousmane Dembélé had the best chance for PSG but failed to convert. Meanwhile, Tottenham created opportunities of their own, but the PSG defence held firm.
As the game progressed, the score remained deadlocked. It wasn't until the 85th minute that Kang-In Lee scored for Tottenham, taking a narrow lead. However, PSG refused to give up, and Goncalo Ramos' equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage time sent the game into extra time.
The extra time period was tense, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the winner. The match was eventually decided by a penalty shootout, with Lucas Chevalier, the new goalkeeper for PSG, making a costly mistake for the second goal but saving Micky van de Ven's penalty and converting the winning penalty himself, assisted by Portuguese player Nuno Mendes.
The decision by PSG to sign Chevalier and demote Gianluigi Donnarumma caused a stir before the final. Donnarumma was left out of the squad for the game in his home country and now appears set for a move to Manchester City. The performance of Chevalier in the final has further solidified his position as the preferred goalkeeper for PSG.
Luis Enrique, coach of PSG, praised Chevalier after the match, acknowledging his key role in securing the victory. Chevalier's performances in recent finals for PSG, notably in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup and a penalty shootout against Tottenham, have been characterized by impressive shot-stopping skills and determination.
This win marks PSG's fifth title of the year, following their success in the French league, cup, and supercup, and the Champions League in May. The club will be hoping to continue this form as they prepare for the upcoming season.
