Paris's new goalkeeper is a champion
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the European Super Cup final, held on a dramatic night at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The match ended in a draw after 90 minutes, with scores of 2-2, before PSG came out on top in the penalty shootout.
The first half was a competitive affair, with both teams creating opportunities. However, it was PSG who squandered their only clear chance, as Ousmane Dembélé failed to convert when presented with a golden opportunity. Tottenham, on the other hand, managed to take a 1-0 lead through Micky van de Ven's goal in the 39th minute.
PSG started the second half strongly and managed to level the scores in the 48th minute, thanks to a goal from Cristian Romero for Tottenham. The tide turned in PSG's favour as the game entered its final stages, with their pressure increasing significantly in the dying minutes.
In the 85th minute, Kang-In Lee scored what seemed to be the winning goal for PSG, only for Goncalo Ramos to equalise for Tottenham in the 90.+4 minute. The match went into extra time, but neither team could find a winner, setting the stage for a tense penalty shootout.
In the shootout, PSG's new goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier, made a costly mistake for the second penalty, but he redeemed himself by saving van de Ven's penalty in the final round. The decisive penalty was converted by Nuno Mendes, giving PSG the victory.
This victory marks PSG's second major trophy of the year, having already won the Champions League in May. However, their only final loss this year was in the Club World Cup in July against Chelsea. Despite the departure of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who left due to contract and salary disagreements, PSG have shown that they have a strong squad capable of competing at the highest level.
The decision to sign Chevalier and demote Donnarumma caused a stir before the final, with Enzo Raiola, Donnarumma's agent, stating that they are still shocked by PSG's treatment of Donnarumma. However, after the match, Luis Enrique praised Lucas Chevalier for his performance, highlighting his shot-stopping, distribution skills, and comfort with the ball at his feet.
This victory marks a promising start to the 2025-2026 season for PSG, who have already won the French league, cup, and supercup earlier in the year. They will be hoping to build on this success and challenge for more trophies in the coming months.
