Paris Saint-Germain Claim UEFA Super Cup Title in Dramatic Penalty Shootout

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have secured their first UEFA Super Cup title, defeating Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling 4-3 penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw in the final.

The match, held at Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy, saw Tottenham take an early lead, with Cristian Romero scoring in the 12th minute. PSG struggled against Tottenham's compact five-man defense, but managed to keep their high-speed attack at bay for much of the game.

In the second half, Tottenham extended their lead through Micky van de Ven, but PSG showed their resilience. Lee Kang-in scored in the 85th minute to set up a tense finish, and Gonçalo Ramos equalized deep in stoppage time to level the match 2-2.

In the ensuing penalty shootout, Nuno Mendes scored the decisive kick for PSG, while two former Bundesliga players, Micky van de Ven and Mathys Tel, missed their penalties for Tottenham. This victory marks PSG’s fifth trophy of the calendar year, adding to an already successful 2025 season for the club.

The decision by PSG's coach to sign the French goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier, and demote Gianluigi Donnarumma during the summer break caused a stir before the final. Chevalier made a mistake leading to the 0-2 goal but saved a penalty from Micky van de Ven in the shootout.

Enzo Raiola, the agent of Gianluigi Donnarumma, stated that they are still shocked by the way PSG treated him a few hours before kickoff. Donnarumma was left out of the squad for the game in his home country and now appears to be on his way to Manchester City.

Despite the drama off the pitch, PSG's coach, Luis Enrique, immediately congratulated Lucas Chevalier after the game, highlighting the team's ability to perform under pressure. The victory also comes after PSG's loss in the Club World Cup final against FC Chelsea in July and their successful Champions League win earlier in the year.

With this win, PSG have added another trophy to their impressive collection, demonstrating their dominance in European football. The team will now look forward to the new season, with the possibility of Donnarumma's departure potentially opening the door for Chevalier to establish himself as the club's starting goalkeeper.

PSG's triumph in the UEFA Super Cup extends their dominance in European leagues, with their next challenge being the new football season. Amidst the drama of the goalkeeper controversy, Lucas Chevalier, who saved a decisive penalty in the shootout, could now potentially establish himself as the club's starting goalkeeper in the absence of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who might join Manchester City.
