The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games came to a close last week, witnessing some remarkable performances by the Japanese Global Team Toyota Athletes (GTTA). Despite various challenges, the athletes demonstrated resilience, determination, and a spirit of camaraderie that truly embodied the Olympic and Paralympic spirit.

Tomoki Ota, a member of the GTTA, completed the gruelling 10000m race despite an injury, expressing his enjoyment of the experience. Teammate Hajimu Ashida, a long jumper, added a touch of humour to the livestream chat by playfully teasing Ota.

Shizuka Hangai, a Para Judo athlete, overcame health issues to win a silver medal in the 48kg J1 category. Despite the difficulties, Hangai expressed her eagerness to continue practising Judo for many years.

Tomoki Suzuki, another GTTA member, won a bronze medal in the Para Athletics Wheelchair Marathon and the 1500m event. Suzuki faced a challenging course but showed remarkable grit in his victories.

Shunya Takahashi placed sixth in the Para Athletics Javelin Throw event but found the Paralympic atmosphere inspiring, channeling that energy into his performance.

In the world of Wheelchair Tennis, Takuya Miki won a silver medal in the doubles event but felt a sense of disappointment after losing in the singles. Miki, however, remains focused on improving his tennis game and increasing his ranking.

Kippei Taninaka, a member of the Rugby Sevens team, did not win any games but found the Olympic atmosphere a wonderful experience.

Keiju Okada, a sailor, won a silver medal in the Sailing Mixed Dinghy event. Okada will be reciting the athletes' oath at the National Sports Festival in Saga Prefecture.

The seven athletes - Ota, Okada, Suzuki, Takahashi, Taninaka, Hangai, and Miki - visited the Toyota Times studio to discuss their experiences at the Games.

All athletes are now eager to tackle their next challenges after the Paris Games, with each expressing their determination to grow and make a positive social impact. As the Olympic and Paralympic flames fade, the spirit of these athletes continues to burn bright, inspiring us all to strive for greatness and never give up.
