Paris Taxpayer Expenses: Indulgence through Mayor's High-End Wardrobe Spending
In the heart of Paris, the city's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, is facing mounting scrutiny over her expenses. Dutch journalist Stefan de Vries, who has been investigating Hidalgo's expense reports since 2019, has uncovered a series of questionable purchases. Transparence Citoyenne, an anti-corruption association, obtained Hidalgo's expense documents in March 2024, revealing purchases totaling €75,050.65 made by the mayor between June 2020 and April 2024. The documents show expenditures on luxury designer clothing, everyday items, and even three massages at the spa of the Okura Tokyo hotel during one of Hidalgo's trips to Japan. The issue of luxury clothing is a sensitive one in the political memory of the French, as it was associated with the fall of François Fillon in 2017 over two luxury suits worth approximately €6,500 each. Hidalgo, too, has been criticised for purchasing a coat from the British brand Burberry for just over €3,000. One internet user questioned whether any accountant, auditor, ethics officer, URSSAF inspector, or tax inspector would accept these expenses in a private company. The controversy deepened when it was revealed that Hidalgo claimed the purchase of her Legion of Honour pins as business expenses, which is prohibited by law. Hidalgo is also responsible for a deficit of more than €10 billion in France's largest city. Despite this deficit and the controversy over her expenses, Hidalgo has not resigned. Le Parisien reported that some of Hidalgo's close associates are forced to acknowledge "a blunder." Inconsistencies and potential scandals were found in the mayor's office purchases of high-end brands. For instance, Hidalgo spent more than €14,000 in a single shop called Apostrophe, owned by Patrick Hazan, who was on Hidalgo's support committee in 2014 and 2020. The sizes of the clothes purchased by Hidalgo vary significantly, with sizes ranging from 36 to 38 and 40 to 42. This inconsistency has added to the suspicion that the purchases were not for official representation but for personal use. The Council of State authorized de Vries to visit City Hall offices to collect the mayor's expense documents in March 2023. However, the elections in progress are showing that the revelations about Hidalgo's expenses are garnering less than 2% of the vote. The controversy surrounding Hidalgo's expenses is a stark reminder of the French Left's privilege of immunity that is clearly unlimited. As the investigations continue, the public awaits the outcome with keen interest.
