Paris secures a triumphant new keeper
Paris Saint-Germain Secure European Super Cup Title in Thrilling Penalty Shootout
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) emerged victorious in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup final, defeating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties (4:3). This triumph marked the fifth title of the year for the French giants.
Before the final, PSG had already clinched the French league, cup, and super cup. However, their only loss this year was the Club World Cup against FC Chelsea. The European Super Cup final was set to be a challenging encounter, with both teams eager to prove their mettle.
The match started off as a tactical battle, with Tottenham effectively nullifying PSG's feared high-speed attacks for much of the game. The first half saw few chances, with Ousmane Dembélé squandering the only big opportunity for PSG.
In the second half, PSG increased their pressure, but Tottenham retreated too far, leaving themselves vulnerable. In the 85th minute, Kang-In Lee scored a goal for PSG to take a 1:0 lead. However, Tottenham equalised just two minutes later through Goncalo Ramos. The match ended in a draw (2:2, 0:1) after regular time.
The decisive moment came in the penalty shootout. Lucas Chevalier, the new goalkeeper of PSG, made a costly mistake for the 0:2 goal but redeemed himself by saving Micky van de Ven's penalty. Nuno Mendes scored the winning penalty for PSG, securing the trophy.
Chevalier's debut for PSG came shortly after his transfer from Lille for around €40 million. He immediately took over starting duties, replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was left out of the squad by coach Luis Enrique. The decision to sign Chevalier and demote Donnarumma caused a stir before the final. Donnarumma's agent, Enzo Raiola, expressed shock over PSG's treatment of Donnarumma just hours before the final.
Two former Bundesliga players, Micky van de Ven (VfL Wolfsburg) and Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich), missed their penalties for Tottenham in the shootout. Chevalier's impressive performance in the final, particularly in the penalty shootout, was crucial in securing PSG’s first trophy with their new goalkeeper.
This victory marks a confident and impactful start for Chevalier with PSG. The team will now shift their focus to their upcoming matches, aiming to continue their dominance in the French league and potentially challenge for more titles in Europe.
