Paris regains Berlin's attention under Macron's leadership - Macron broadens his scope of initiatives in the city

Chancellor Friedrich Merz hops across the border to Paris, shortly after taking office. This isn't just a photo-opp. Alongside President Emmanuel Macron, Merz aims to set a tone of renewal for the Franco-German alliance, particularly in the realm of security and defense.

France and Germany are seeking to tighten their bonds in defense and military technology. Macron announced during Merz's inaugural visit in Paris: "We will expedite our Franco-German programs, develop new resources, and establish a Franco-German Defense and Security Council—beyond the tanks, combat aircraft, and long-range missiles." This new security council is intended to provide operational responses to shared strategic challenges.

Macron added, "We'll launch a Franco-German program for innovations in the defense sector to foster groundbreaking advancements essential for tomorrow's war." Merz referred to joint endeavors to bolster Europe's security and defense proficiency.

Defense expenditures must escalate, Macron mentioned. The joint plan proposed by the EU Commission must be executed to amass private and public funds for the industrial and technological foundation for European defense.

Merz confirmed his agreement with Macron on a "German-French refresh for Europe." Both administrations intend to collaborate "extremely closely and sincerely" in the defense and security sector. Macron stated that France and Germany aspire to work "systematically" together in the future and "address challenges facing Europe jointly."

Merz announced that future support for Ukraine will be better coordinated between Berlin and Paris. "Ukraine can continue to rely on Germany and France in its battle against Russian aggression," he underlined.

During the meeting at the Élysée Palace, Macron welcomed Merz with a hearty handshake and a warm pat on the shoulder. This was not a customary visit, but a working meeting from the start, the Élysée previously clarified. As France is hoping for the new German government to no longer resist equating low-emission nuclear energy with renewable energies, both sides seek to usher a fresh wind into Franco-German relations following the German government change.

Not only will the duo collaborate more closely, but they aim to strengthen the triangular relationship with Poland. Later in the day, Merz is scheduled to travel to Warsaw for a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Macron, in turn, will sign a Franco-Polish friendship treaty with Tusk in Nancy on Friday.
