Tragedy Strikes a Ukrainian Family in Israel

Last Sunday, a Ukrainian family seeking cancer treatment for their youngest daughter in Israel was reportedly victims of a devastating Iranian missile attack.

The family, residing in Israel since late 2022, consisted of Anastasia Borik, an 8-year-old leukemia patient; her mother, Maria Peshkurova; her grandmother, Olena Peshkurova; and two cousins, Konstantin Totvich and Ilya Peshkurov.

A year prior, Anastasia had initially received cancer treatments and underwent a bone marrow transplant in Ukraine. unfortunateley, these treatments proved ineffective. The family then sought advanced treatment in Israel, a country offering specialized cancer care unavailable during wartime in Ukraine.

Activist Lena Dubrovner, who lends a helping hand to Ukrainian war refugees, visited the family's residence after hearing about the attack. However, she found no survivors.

Over the following days, Anastasia and her grandmother's bodies were identified by the activist, while Maria's was extracted from the rubble only on Friday and transported to Israel's National Center for Forensic Medicine for identification. The remains of Kostyantyn and Ilya were also discovered later.

This family had left their home in Odessa, Ukraine, to find the best possible treatment for Anastasia. The missile strike during their stay in Israel left them with a heart-wrenching end. Their courage and determination in pursuit of her treatment serves as a stark reminder of the countless families impacted by the ongoing conflicts and healthcare disparities worldwide.
