A Lineage of Popes: The Papal Namesake of Leo XIV

Papal Titles Changed, Formerly Known as Leo

Hear ye, hear ye! The newest Pope, Leo XIV, has taken the throne. Choosing a name synonymous with greatness in the Catholic Church, this American Cardinal hails from the lineage of Popes with the name Leo. Let's delve into some of their stories.

Leo XIV's moniker brings to mind Leo I, also known as Leo the Great. Born in Tuscany in the year 440, he died in Rome on November 10, 461. He was the first to claim for himself the overall responsibility and authority as the first of the apostles over the entire Church, setting a precedent for future Popes.

Throughout history, nearly all of the Popes who bore the name Leo originated from present-day Italy. Speaking of Leos, Leo III sought the protection of Charlemagne and fled to him in Paderborn in 799 to escape opposition in Rome. In 800, he crowned Charlemagne as Emperor.

The life of Leo V didn't meet such triumphs. His pontificate ended in deadly violence when he was imprisoned and killed on the orders of the antipope Christopher in 903. Leo VIII, conversely, was elected Pope under the leadership of Emperor Otto I. However, the deposed Pope John later returned to office, forcing his opponent to flee to the emperor.

Leo IX, from the present-day Eguisheim in Alsace, enhanced the role of the College of Cardinals in the governance of the Church and reorganized the papal administration.

The last to bear the name Leo was Leo XIII, who lived from 1878 to 1903. He is remembered as a peacemaker, resolving conflicts with Switzerland and many Latin American states during his reign. Leo XIV could follow suit, becoming another "Pope of Peace," according to Augsburg church historian Joerg Ernesti.

Likely to make a significant impact like his predecessors, Leo XIV belongs to an order - the Augustinians - and has spoken first and foremost about peace. The Augustinians, like the Franciscans, Dominicans, and Carmelites, are medieval mendicant orders that follow the rule of Saint Augustine, with celibacy and the renunciation of personal property as their core tenets.

Martin Luther, the famous Augustinian monk who triggered the Reformation in the 16th century with his theses, is a notable example of this order. So, keep your eyes on Leo XIV, a descendant of a long lineage of influential Popes, as he embarks on his Papal journey!
