Leo I: Great BeginningsThe origin story of Popes named Leo begins with Leo I, who reigned from 440 to 461 AD. Also known as Leo the Great, he was the first Pontiff to channel the status of being the apostle Peter's representative to assert his authority over the entire Church.
Leo III: A Bold EscapeFast forward a few centuries, and we meet Leo III. This trailblazer sought refuge from the mighty Charlemagne to escape Rome's pesky enemies in 799 AD. The clever move paid off when, in 800, he crowned Charlemagne as Emperor.
Leo V: Tragic FateUnfortunately, Leo V met a violent end during his tenure. In 903 AD, he was imprisoned and murdered at the orders of his rival, Christophorus, after being ousted as Pope.
Leo VIII: Tug-o-WarLeo VIII, on the other hand, wasn't so unlucky. Elected by Emperor Otto I in 963, he'd have been sitting pretty, if not for the pesky pretender Pope John. In a twist of events, it was John who reclaimed the throne, forcing our Leo to flee to the Emperor.
Leo IX: A Transatlantic TieBorn in present-day Eguisheim, Alsace, Leo IX shook things up for the papacy. He emphasized the College of Cardinals' role in Church leadership and reorganized the papal administration during his reign from 1049 to 1054.
Leo XIII: The PredecessorTake a leap to the modern era and we meet Leo XIII, who served as Pope from 1878 to 1903. He was a diplomat who resolved conflicts with Switzerland and Latin American nations.
Pope Francis: The PrecedentBefore Pope Leo XIV, there was a significant Pope worth mentioning - Pope Francis. This charismatic leader, who served from 2013 to 2025, was known for addressing pressing global issues such as climate change and social inequality, and promoting inclusivity and global diversity. He even captured the world's attention with his bold acts, like visiting a refugee camp on the edge of Europe.
