Nico Sturm held aloft the mighty Stanley Cup as the very last man of the Florida Panthers, clinching the most esteemed trophy in ice hockey with a crushing 5:1 thrashing of the Edmonton Oilers. German hockey star Leon Draisaitl, however, is once again left in the cold, having suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat - just like last year when his team, the Edmonton Oilers, lost to the Panthers, this time across seven exciting games.

"I'm gutted. The bottom line is: we didn't win, and that's all that matters. We came here to win, lost once more, and now we're empty handed,” Draisaitl lamented after the final bell, adding, "We didn't score enough goals, and we let in too many, making too many mistakes."

No shot on goal for Draisaitl

Draisaitl racked up an impressive 11 goals and 22 assists in 22 playoff games this season but couldn’t muster a single shot on goal during the Tuesday night showdown in Sunrise, Florida. His teammate Connor McDavid also had a quiet game, while Sam Reinhart led the charge for the Panthers with a hat-trick.

"Coming back isn't easy. You know how tough it is. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. But now we're here, and we’ve accomplished the task," Reinhart said.

A Mirror Image of Woe

Last year, the Florida team triumphed in the first three games against the Oilers, only to lose the next three, ending in a nail-biting seventh game that the Panthers won 2:1.

This time around, the Florida hockey arena was a theater of bitter disillusionment for the Canadians, and a scene of jubilant celebration for the Panthers, but the final series ended earlier than last year. The series was tied at 2:2 after four games, but the Panthers seized control, winning 5:2 in Edmonton and putting the question to bed at home on the first opportunity.

"We lost to a damn fine team," McDavid said. "No one gave up, no one surrendered, but they're just a darn good team. They retained the Stanley Cup for a good reason."

The Panthers struck early and played a near-perfect game

Three days after their victory in Edmonton, the hosts loaded the scoreboard 2:0 by the end of the first period. Reinhart opened the scoring in the fifth minute, and Tkachuk notched the second goal 47 seconds before the buzzer. An Oilers goalkeeper blunder allowed Reinhart to score his second goal. The Panthers committed barely visible errors and scored again when the Oilers pulled their netminder with seven minutes remaining, opting to ice six players: 26 seconds later, Reinhart scored into the empty net for 4:0. When he netted his fourth goal of the night for 5:0, the game was virtually decided. Vasili Podkolzin’s goal was little more than a consolation prize.

Sam Bennett was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He amassed an impressive 15 goals and 7 assists for the Panthers during the playoffs.

Despite Draisaitl's impressive run of 11 goals and 22 assists in 22 playoff games, he was unable to score a single shot against the Panthers, mirroring the failure he faced in last year's match.
