Palestinians persistently leaving Gaza region
The Israeli army has closed the escape route from Gaza City into the southern part of the Gaza Strip, following the intensification of its ground offensive in the city. This development comes after a temporary opening of the route a few days ago.
The Israeli army is currently engaged in fighting against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, with the city of Gaza being the epicentre of the conflict. According to the Israeli army, they have destroyed observation posts belonging to terrorist organizations as part of their attacks.
The situation in Gaza City is dire, with at least 19 people reportedly killed in Israeli attacks since the morning, as per medical sources in the Gaza Strip. However, it's important to note that the claims of both sides cannot be independently verified at this time.
Before the military action, around one million residents and internally displaced persons lived in the city. The ongoing conflict has forced approximately 480,000 Palestinians to leave the largest city in Gaza. The Israeli army stated that 450,000 had fled the city on Thursday evening.
Many people are now fleeing the city towards the south, while others are moving within the city. There is only one road that people can use to travel south, making the situation increasingly challenging for those seeking to escape the conflict.
Soldiers are expanding their operations in the city of Gaza, and the city, located in the sealed coastal region of Gaza, is under continuous bombardment. A high-ranking member of a Hamas battalion was among those killed in the latest attacks.
Residents have confirmed the movement of people within and out of the city to the German Press Agency. The Israeli army, however, called on residents of Gaza City to flee to so-called humanitarian zones further south, but the route was effectively closed again as part of the ongoing military operations and blockades, with no specific reopening date mentioned in the sources.
The situation in Gaza City remains volatile, and the international community is urging both sides to cease fire and find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
