Palestinians persistently leave Gaza amidst ongoing crisis
In the sealed-off coastal region of the Gaza Strip, the city of Gaza, the largest city in the region, has become the epicentre of a military conflict between the Israeli army and Hamas.
On October 16, 2024, the Israeli army carried out attacks that resulted in the death of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas chief in Gaza. However, Chalil al-Haja, another high-ranking Hamas member, survived the attack despite conflicting reports.
The Israeli army has been providing updates on their operations, stating that they have destroyed observation posts 'belonging to terrorist organizations' within the city.
The intensified military operations have led to a mass exodus from the city. As of Thursday evening, approximately 450,000 people had already fled towards the south, with the number rising to around 480,000 by the following day.
The Israeli army temporarily opened a route out of the city to the south, but has since closed it. Now, there is only one road that people can use to head south.
Thousands of people are currently fleeing the city, with many moving towards the south. Some are choosing to stay within the city instead of leaving.
The Israeli military operations in the city are highly controversial, with at least 19 people reportedly killed in Israeli attacks since the morning, according to medical sources in the Gaza Strip. However, the figures from both sides cannot currently be independently verified.
Soldiers are expanding their operations in the city, with the Israeli army fighting Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Before the start of the intensified military operations, around one million residents and internally displaced persons lived in Gaza.
The city of Gaza, once bustling with life, now stands as a testament to the ongoing conflict. The fate of its people and the future of the city remain uncertain as the conflict continues.
