The city of Gaza has been engulfed in a volatile situation over the past few days, as the Israeli army intensifies its operations against Hamas and other extremist groups in the southwest.

Since the morning of the latest escalation, medical sources in the Gaza Strip have reported at least 35 deaths as a result of Israeli attacks. The Israeli army, currently engaged in fighting within the Gaza Strip, has expanded its operations in the city, aiming to destroy observation posts belonging to terrorist organizations, secure weapons, and deactivate explosive devices.

The Israeli army's claims cannot currently be independently verified, but it is known that they have reported killing an unspecified number of enemies in these operations. The conflict has resulted in significant displacement, with approximately 480,000 Palestinians fleeing the city.

The refugees are left with only one escape route, the Al-Rashid Street along the coast towards the south. Many are fleeing the city towards the south, while others are moving within the city. However, the Israeli army has closed a temporarily opened second escape route from the city to the south of the Gaza Strip.

The situation in Gaza has been dire for nearly two years, with over 65,000 deaths reported since the start of the war, with no distinction made between civilians and combatants. Key Hamas leaders have been among the casualties. On May 13, 2024, Mohammed al-Sinwar, the Gaza military chief, and Mohammed Sabaneh, commander of the Rafah Brigade, were killed in an underground Hamas command center. Other attempts to kill top Hamas leaders, such as an airstrike in Doha against a meeting of Hamas officials, resulted in the deaths of five Hamas members but the core leadership survived. Yahya Sinwar, another major Hamas leader, was reported most likely killed in October 2024 by Israeli forces.

The displacement has left many Palestinians in precarious situations. Many cannot afford to transport their few belongings, are exhausted or sick, and do not trust Israeli assurances that they will be safe in the so-called humanitarian zones in the south. Before the intensification of Israel's military operations, there were around one million residents and internally displaced persons in the city.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate, with both sides reporting significant casualties and losses. The situation remains fluid and uncertain, with both sides claiming victory and the international community urging for a ceasefire to prevent further loss of life and displacement.
