Palestinians persist in evacuating Gaza

In the besieged Gaza Strip, the situation continues to deteriorate as thousands of Palestinians flee their homes amidst intensified fighting between the Israeli army and Hamas.

The Israeli army has expanded its operations in Gaza City, destroying observation posts belonging to terrorist organisations, securing weapons, and deactivating explosive devices. According to their reports, an unspecified number of enemies have been killed in these operations. However, it's important to note that the claims made by both sides cannot currently be independently verified.

The current political leaders and representatives of Hamas involved in the conflict include Yahya Sinwar, the de facto leader of Hamas in Gaza since 2017. Sinwar has taken over political leadership after Ismail Haniyya's death in August 2024, with Sinwar controlling the coordination between the military wing and the political bureau. His deputy is Khalil al-Hayya. Another notable figure is Ghazi Hamad, a senior Hamas leader and planner of the October 7, 2023 attacks, who survived an Israeli airstrike on Hamas leadership in Doha and has recently appeared publicly to discuss the conflict.

The deaths reported do not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Medical sources in the Gaza Strip report that at least 35 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since the morning, and the war in Gaza has resulted in over 65,000 deaths since its start nearly two years ago.

Many Palestinians cannot afford to transport their few belongings, are exhausted or sick, and do not trust the Israeli assurances that they would be safe in the so-called humanitarian zones in the south. This leaves the refugees with only the Al-Rashid Street along the coast towards the southwest as an escape route.

The temporary opening of a second escape route from the city in the south of the Gaza Strip was closed again by the Israeli army. As a result, many people are still fleeing Gaza City towards the southwest, while others are moving within the city.

The Israeli army reported that 450,000 had fled the city on Thursday evening. However, the latest reports suggest that the number of displaced Palestinians has risen to approximately 480,000.

It's crucial to remember that Hamas, along with other extremist groups, is responsible for massacres in Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and over 250 abductions.

As the conflict continues, the international community is urged to intervene and ensure the safety and well-being of the civilian population in Gaza.
