Palestinian residents of Gaza City depart during the night due to Israeli military actions
In the Gaza Strip, a tragic turn of events unfolded on Wednesday, with at least 63 lives lost due to Israeli strikes and gunfire across the region, with the majority of casualties reported in Gaza City.
Amidst the chaos, many residents of Gaza City are hesitant to comply with Israel's orders to relocate southwards. Their reluctance stems from the dangers, dire conditions, lack of food, and fear of permanent displacement in the southern area.
The United Nations humanitarian office (OCHA) has voiced serious concerns over the rapid depletion of fuel and food stocks in northern Gaza in a matter of days. This is a result of closed aid entry points and the challenging resupply from the south. The only crossing in northern Gaza was closed by Israel last week, further exacerbating the situation.
Displaced Palestinians have been moving southwards as per Israeli orders. Yasser Saleh, one of the displaced, shared his struggle, stating that they were heading to sleep on the streets towards the beach, with children who were ill and a young child who was 45 days old and suffering.
Ahmed, a schoolteacher, prefers to stay in his neighbourhood rather than leave Gaza City due to uncertainties about returning and the ongoing war.
Late on Tuesday, Israel's military announced that humanitarian aid would be allowed to enter northern Gaza, but provided no details. However, Israel's military did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the specifics of this aid.
Some Palestinians were seen walking along the coastal road in central Gaza, while many others were traveling with cars, trucks, and carts loaded with their belongings.
The United Nations, along with several humanitarian organizations such as UNICEF, FAO, WHO, and related bodies, have expressed serious concerns about the availability of food and supplies in northern Gaza. They emphasize the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian access to prevent a catastrophe amid confirmed famine conditions.
The Israeli military is reportedly attempting to empty Gaza City of civilians to confront thousands of Hamas combatants. However, the ongoing displacement and the closure of key aid entry points have raised concerns about the future well-being of the residents of Gaza.
The U.N. humanitarian office (OCHA) also stated that resupply from south to north is increasingly challenging due to mounting road congestion and insecurity. The situation is critical, and swift action is needed to ensure the safety and well-being of the people in the Gaza Strip.
