Palestinian civilians in Gaza City scramble amidst relentless Israeli offensive, prompting widespread anxiety
In the last 24 hours, Gaza health authorities have reported the tragic loss of 33 lives, marking a concerning escalation in the ongoing conflict. The violence has been concentrated in the Sheikh Radwan and Tel Al-Hawa areas, where Israeli forces have been relentless in their bombardment.
Israeli forces have made significant advancements in Gaza City, with control now extending to the eastern suburbs. This has led to displacement of many Palestinians, with estimates suggesting that about 600,000 are still residing in the city.
Among the displaced is Osama Awad, who stated that the bombing, shelling, airstrikes, and naval bombardment by the Israelis have been getting closer. Crowds of people can be seen on the Al Rashid road, and vehicles are a common sight on the Salah al Din road.
The conflict has taken a personal toll on many families, with 20 or so surviving hostages still being held by Hamas. Families of these hostages have been imploring Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to stop the offensive and negotiate a ceasefire.
Hamas, on the other hand, has stated that it will not disarm until a Palestinian state is established. This position has been reiterated by the armed wing of Hamas, which has also claimed that the hostages are distributed throughout the neighborhoods of Gaza City.
Israel's defence minister, Israel Katz, has threatened that if Hamas does not release the hostages and disarm, Gaza will be destroyed. However, Israel maintains that the extent of hunger has been exaggerated and that Hamas could end the war at once if it surrendered, freed the hostages, disarmed, and disbanded.
The International Defence Force (IDF) claimed to have killed Mahmoud Yusuf Abu Alkhir, deputy head of military intelligence in Hamas' Bureij Battalion. The IDF stated that Abu Alkhir took part in 'terrorist attacks against Israeli troops and the state'.
The conflict has been ongoing for almost two years, during which Israel's offensive has resulted in the deaths of more than 65,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.
Countries such as the United States, Qatar, and Egypt are actively involved in mediating indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas to support Gaza. Germany has expressed support and provided humanitarian aid. However, some countries have not directly involved themselves in supporting refugees from Gaza City, making it unclear which specific countries have refrained from direct involvement.
Despite the ongoing violence, protests continue on both sides of the border. Dozens of protesters gathered on the Israeli side, calling for an end to the war and the release of the hostages. Most of Gaza's 2 million Palestinians have experienced repeated Israeli onslaughts and multiple displacements.
The conflict shows no signs of abating, with both sides dug in and unwilling to back down. The international community continues to watch with concern, hoping for a peaceful resolution that will bring an end to the suffering of the people of Gaza.
