Barbadian Prodigy Johann Layne Set to Debut in ODI Series Against Pakistan
Pakistan ODI series misses Matthew Forde's participation
Johann Layne, a promising Barbadian seam-bowling all-rounder, is set to make his debut in the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan, which commences on Friday in Trinidad & Tobago.
Layne, who played for West Indies Under-19 at the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup, has been recognized as a talented player with notable potential. His domestic List A cricket record includes 13 wickets in 12 matches, reflecting his involvement primarily in one-day formats at the domestic level.
The young cricketer was drafted into the West Indies ODI squad in August 2025 to replace an injured player, Matthew Forde, who dislocated his left shoulder during a training session. Forde, who holds the joint-fastest half-century in ODI history with Ab de Villiers, will miss the ODI series against Pakistan.
Jewel Andrew, the youngest debutant for the West Indies in cricket history, will also be part of the ODI squad. Andrew made his T20I debut against Pakistan earlier this year.
Romario Shepherd will make a return to the squad, replacing Alzarri Joseph, whose rest has been extended. Shepherd's impressive performances in previous matches will be crucial for the West Indies team, aiming to redeem themselves in the ODI format and strengthen their chances for the 2027 World Cup.
Daren Sammy, the Head Coach, stated that maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success for the West Indies team. Pakistan, on the other hand, has won seven consecutive series against the West Indies, including a 2-1 victory in the recent T20I series at Lauderhill.
With the ODI series against Pakistan set to begin, the West Indies team will be looking to Layne and Shepherd to contribute significantly to their efforts to turn the tables on their rivals.
Matthew Forde's injury has provided an opportunity for Johann Layne to debut in the West Indies ODI squad, as he replaces Forde, who holds the joint-fastest half-century in ODI history. Meanwhile, Romario Shepherd returns to the squad, replacing Alzarj Joseph.
